King Street Arts have secured the tender from the DSD as artist advisor on the new public art work in Belfast city centre which is part of the Street’s Ahead regeneration in Bank Sq and King St (Folktown). The new art work will be a large piece on the Castle Court service yard wall from Berry St to Bank Sq. It will be visible from Royal Ave and the aim is to attract and interact with the viewer and draw them in to the ‘new’ area around Bank Sq which will be ready in November 2014. It will add to the arts trail, which started with the Tall Man (see picture) in Castle St in 2010 (sponsored by the DSD through the ReStore pilot scheme and delivered by the local community) The new piece in Folktown will be of great significance to the local community and the regeneration of the area.
Key to the process is the involvement of the local stakeholders and the wider city community. We encourage anybody interested in taking part in shaping this exciting new work to take part in our workshop event Sat 26th April, 10.30am-1.30pm in Berry Street church’s cafe on Chapel Lane. We will provide lunch and refreshments. The workshop will be based on the World Cafe model and will help us create a number of themes to take forward, and from which to create the final piece.
The consultation and exhibition of these themes will start on 24th May and run for a week. Anybody is welcome to call in a vote for the best themes to take forward!
The final piece which will be selected by the Minister for Social Development will then be created over the Summer of 2014 and installed by Nov 2014.
